Mother’s Day Tea Party

I attended a Mother’s Day Tea Party with my Mother-in-Law.  She has 4, yes 4, sons.  I’m married to her eldest.  I’ve spent my whole marriage telling her: how much I love him;  how wonderful he is to me; and the kind and good things he does for people.  Why?  Because all Momma’s love to hear others tell them wonderful things about their kids.  (Truth!)  As a result, I’m her favorite  D-i-L.  No, she hasn’t told me that but there are only 3 of us left and a girl can pretend, right?

So, when I heard their retirement community was hosting a Mother’s Day Tea Party I asked her if she planned on going.  She said no because she doesn’t have any daughters.  What?  And, I thought I was her favorite.  On top of that she’s never, ever been to a tea party!  So we made reservations and I promised to bring the table decor.  I got busy making a quilt for the table as to leave as her gift.  I packed the milk glass snack plates.  My husband bought roses and I made the bouquets.  I made finger sandwiches, packed the linen napkins and silverware. We drove 125 miles and showed up with a party!  Want to see?

All I did was add a border to the vintage tablecloth.

The back was pieced with Bible verses.

I used a very floral quilting motif.

Sandwiches and cookies (from the bakery) were served on milk glass snack plates…the plates she gave me years ago. I took each of them a vintage hanky as a little gift- in case of tears.  And, guess what, we all used them!  The chairs have vintage pillowcases covering them.

Antique 3-tiered plates that belonged to her Mom held the Rainbow sandwiches, the cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches and the pimento cheese sandwiches.

Rainbow sandwiches:  cream cheese + pineapple + pecans = Delicious!  Yes, a dot of food coloring for make them pink and blue.

4 generations. It was a precious memory.
